My oldest is learning to dress herself. The process is both thrilling and excruciating, as one may expect when dealing with a four-year-old. This girl can take five full minutes to put on a pair of pants and not even care that they’re backward. She’s just so darn proud of herself that she got them on. And while we may get some strange looks at the grocery store, I’m here for it.
Because the older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve realized backwards pants don’t matter. They’re not career ending. In fact, they’re quite endearing. These are the little moments that should be relished when the go-go-go pace of life leaves you looking for a 25th hour. (If you find one, let me know. I could often use it right between four and five AM when my youngest wakes up for her bottle … but I digress.)
In all seriousness, the older I get, the more precious time becomes. It seems to be a lesson many of us revisit over the years. Sprouting grays has a funny way of doing that to you. Five minutes spent putting on pants can seem like an atrocious waste. It’s also the kind of core memory I hope to never forget.
When we started to plan this issue’s editorial, we’d just begun the pants lesson. Each morning my daughter came running into the kitchen shouting that she’d dressed herself and we’d high-five over her backwards pants. And I kept telling myself these are the moments I want to preserve. But I also thought about the things I was certain I’d never forget, that I can’t even recall now.
That’s why we decided to highlight the beauty of a vacation photoshoot. It’s the best way to preserve core memories with loved ones. Whether you’re getting away with the gals, on a family vacation or spending a romantic weekend with your partner, I encourage you to book the shoot.
Because while a few selfies on a wildflower hike are nice and you’ll certainly want to snap some pics at one of Seattle’s best urban parks — nothing beats a few high-quality images. Even if you put your pants on backwards, you won’t regret the pictures.
